Of all the art forms, architecture – by virtue of its function – is the one that most immediately reflects the ideals, developments and ruptures in society. Architectural history has always been a fundamental component of the Art History degree at the TU Berlin, an institute responsible for leading local, regional and international debates surrounding architectural research and historical preservation.

The programme at our institute is distinguished by its emphasis on proximate object analysis. With the help of specific buildings and projects, questions of art historical classification and the integration of urban space are discussed in relation to function, aesthetics, materiality, construction, meaning, as well as authorship and patronage. In addition, a central aspect of the department’s research and teaching examines the discourse surrounding contemporary historicism, and actual as well as staged authenticity and traditions; this we investigate in light of the identity-building effects of architectural heritage. Our institute specializes in post-war Modernism, the research and valorization of which has become a critical issue in the present-day discourse in architectural history and historical preservation.
